About
My creative practice spans fine arts, film and design, unconventionally defined. My artistic endeavours are inspired by and in dialogue with issues of social justice and public policy, areas I am passionate about and that ground my professional work. I am interested in the intersection between art and politics and have been using my own practice to explore their interface.
In film, my work to date has been documentary in nature. My first feature-length endeavour explored the impacts of the Israeli occupation and building of the Separation Barrier or "Wall" on the lives of Palestinians living in the West Bank. This project triggered my interest in the use of storytelling and narrative as means of influencing understanding and mindsets.
My work in the fine arts has been more exploratory, largely engaging with themes related to sustainability and interconnectivity. Most recently I have tried my hand at architectural and sculptural concepts which too have had a political inspiration of sorts.
I see my professional work as often involving design though I am conscious that initially people may not understand it as such. I think of much of my work in statebuilding as being "institutional and process design" practiced in the most difficult of contexts. Many of the principles of modern design - adapting to the needs of users and specific contexts, using design as a means of generating new ideas and inspiration and iteratively redesigning for impact - are key tenets of effective statebuilders as well.
My practice in these areas is very much in development and I welcome opportunities for dialogue and collaboration with like-minded individuals. For further information about my professional work, please see https://uk.linkedin.com/in/shruti-mehrotra-92b6434.
